Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen was selected through a public vote among ArchDaily’s global readership of more than 160 million annual users. From over 4,000 projects worldwide, 75 finalists were shortlisted across 15 categories, with the centre ultimately winning in healthcare architecture.
Designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, Mikkelsen Arkitekter and STED, the project reflects shared values of democracy, nature and diversity. The building is designed around people, with warm materials, clear spatial flows and generous daylight creating a welcoming and intuitive healthcare environment.
Nature is a defining element of the project. A two-storey garden with smaller courtyards and a publicly accessible roof garden connects the building to its surroundings and supports community engagement at Herlev Hospital. The outdoor areas are open to passers-by and promote biodiversity.
By integrating nature as a core part of the treatment environment, the centre supports patient well-being and reflects research showing the positive effects of green spaces on physical and emotional health. The award underscores the joint ambition of Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects and STED to advance healthcare architecture through human-centred and socially responsible design.
